we did this and it changed our ability yo get out of the door. We live in an old house that has a foyer but no real closet - when we moved in there was this terrible under stair, no door, coat bar situation and nowhere to store bags, hats, winter gear, etc. so we installed built in drawers with hooks for hats and keys, and a landing area for mail and a charging station. Complete game changer. Coats are now on a peg rail by the door. Here's a bad picture of the before and after:

I had this idea recently when I was visiting my friend Genevieve's house. They had all this entryway stuff right in the front of their house, but no coat closet to store it in. Then you walk a little further into the house and there is a vastly under-used linen closet. I told her that I wanted to turn that closet into their mudroom and she was like WAIT YES PLEASE. So we're hopefully going to do that soon! Here's some of the inspo I showed her to convince her this was the move.
