The tin can phone is our solution for giving our kids independence to plan hangs with their friends and call their family members without the need for a smartphone. Also clutch - it can call 911 if the kids ever need it.

Important disclaimer, this needs to be a coordinated gift with a group of your kids friends parents. It's no fun if they've got no one to call!

Also important, get them a little address book so they can write their friends /families numbers.
